“Afterlife” by Kaila Patterson

Afterlife

At the great end of eternity,

I reunite with my little self,

My former being of flimsy shoelaces,

Frizzy wisps to a toothy grin,

Neatly tied shoes and a gingham pinafore,

All brightened by the godly glow,

Indeed I believe dying feels this way,

I see stories glimmering in her wide eyes,

And as I scoop her into my arms,

Her head tucks against my collar,

Still longing for a glimpse of warmth,

My fingers run through those locks,

Our curly heads nuzzle together,

As I soak up the angelic scent of heaven,

Dusty chalk mixed with children's paint,

As I absorb the seraphic symphonies,

Snapping pencils and giddy laughter,

My tiny self snores a bit on my shoulder,

Her drool as damp as the kiss on her head,

So I carry us both off to everlasting peace,

Into the snowy spheres of nothingness,

In the constant silence perhaps,

We shall finally be as one,

With endless stories to tell.
